Women's health startup Flo Health has just hit a unicorn valuation of $1 billion after raising over $200 million in Series C funding from General Atlantic.
The London-based startup, which launched in 2015, offers users services such as tracking their menstrual cycle and monitoring and getting personalized insights about their reproductive health.
Users can also tap into a digital discussion community to discuss their health and wellness issues.
When Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, millions of women in the US lost the right to have abortions. Consequently, many women deleted their period-tracking apps because they were concerned about whether their health data would be shared with third-party providers — and potentially implicate those seeking abortions.
Flo developed an 'Anonymous Mode' in response to this ruling, which "allows users to access the app without associating their name, email address, or technical identifiers with their health data," cofounder and CEO Dmitry Gurski told Business Insider.
Amid a wider slump in funding for femtech startups in 2022 and 2023, Gurksi said that Flo's "steady, sturdy growth" over the last eight years helped the company cinch funding. As of June 2024, Flo has nearly 70 million monthly active users and nearly 5 million paid subscribers.
The Series C was led by growth investor General Atlantic, catapulting it to a unicorn valuation. This makes Flo the first purely digital consumer women's health app to achieve unicorn status.
With the fresh funding, the startup will expand its user base by tailoring more features for those with perimenopause and menopause. It will also work on providing more personalized features for users, such as accurate cycle and symptom prediction.
