  • The stock and bond markets close on major holidays, and both have early closures on certain days.
  • While stock market holidays also apply to the bond market, the bond market's early closures differ.
  • You can still initiate certain actions (e.g., deposits or withdrawals) in your brokerage account during closure.

The U.S. stock market generally closes for major holidays like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Not all holidays result in stock market closure. You can still trade on holidays like Valentine's Day and Halloween.

During market closures, you won't be able to place trades on the best online brokerages or investment platforms (with the expectation of crypto exchanges).

Here are the dates and major holidays that the stock and bond markets are closed in 2024.

Is the stock market open on Labor Day?

No, the stock market is not open on Labor day. The U.S. stock markets will be closed all day Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day. The Nasdaq and the NYSE are closed during normal trading hours for the federal holiday.

The Friday preceding Labor Day operates during normal trading hours and closes at 4 p.m. ET. The U.S. stock market reopens for normal trading starting Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Is the bond market open on Labor Day?

The U.S. bond markets will be closed all day on Labor Day. Bond markets do not close early on the Friday preceding Labor Day and close at the normal time at 2 p.m. ET.

Bond markets reopen for normal trading hours on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m. ET.

What time does the stock market open?

The stock market's regular trading hours are weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. However, the market will close as early as 1 p.m. ET on the day before or after certain holidays.

Plus, depending on your brokerage or investment platform, you may be able to trade during pre-market hours (4 to 9:30 a.m. ET). The same goes for after-hours trading, which is available from 4 to 8 p.m. ET.

But the available hours may vary depending on your broker. For instance, SoFi Invest only offers pre-market trading from 9 to 9:30 a.m. ET, but it provides extended hours of trading from 4 to 8 p.m.

Stock market holidays vs. Bond market holidays

Stock and bond market holidays generally follow the same schedule. However, there are occasionally differences in the market schedules. In addition to stock market holidays, the bond market is also closed on Indigenous Peoples'/Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

Can you still use your account while the stock market is closed?

You probably won't be able to trade during the weekend or on holidays when the market is closed unless you're using international stock exchanges or electronic communication networks.

During holidays, you can check balances, monitor your portfolio's performance, or initiate deposits or withdrawals. Remember that you won't be able to place any orders until the market reopens. The rate at which fund deposits or withdrawals are complete depends on your brokerage's hours.
